How different would Liverpool’s history have been if Bob Paisley had left Anfield at the end of the 1953-54 season when the Reds were relegated to Division Two and he was put up for transfer? One of the club’s directors and later chairman, T.V. Williams the man who would also recruit Bill Shankly - offered him a job as reserve team trainer and physiotherapist which he gladly accepted.

Only one player, Phil Thompson, was at Liverpool for the whole of Paisley’s glorious nine-year reign as manager during which time the team won nineteen major trophies, a powerful testament to his managerial skills in identifying the talent of players and introducing them into the side at the right time for them and, more importantly, the team.

Awarded the MBE in 1977, he was voted Manager of the Year no less than six times, in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983.
